The book contains 80 black-and-white photographs taken during a four-month trip in 1979 and 1980 to Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Cologne, Hamburg, East Berlin, and West Berlin, Germany; and Prague, Czech Republic, while photographing German Expressionist architecture and its cities. The book will be published 40 years after the photographs were taken, and will include many previously unpublished works.

Unlike previous architectural styles, the German Expressionist style has no ornamentation to show off its power, nor does it have the rationalist, functional beauty of the Bauhaus. It is an architecture full of seeming contradictions, yet it is interesting in that the architecture imitates some figurative form."
